The story

Heuriger Spaetrot Review: Gumpoldskirchen’s Award Winning Austrian Tavern Cuisine

The Kitchen and Its Philosophy

Heuriger Spaetrot in Gumpoldskirchen redefines traditional Austrian tavern cuisine through a shift toward fresh preparation and direct farm sourcing. Owner Johanna Gebeshuber steers the operation away from static buffets and toward daily craftsmanship. Chef Christian Keil supports this direction by enforcing strict slow food standards and prioritizing certified organic ingredients across every service. A twelve point Gault&Millau rating reflects this disciplined approach.

Signature Plates and Seasonal Focus

Regulars frequently order the crisp oven roasted Tullnerfelder organic pork accompanied by smoked bacon strips, cracklings, and potato dumplings. The kitchen treats every plate of Austrian country cooking as a seasonal exercise in restraint, highlighting a lukewarm artichoke salad dressed with tomatoes and wild leek. Cold snack counters display truffle oil egg spreads and pickled mountain trout, while vegetarian offerings maintain identical sourcing requirements.

Vaulted Rooms and Local Wines

Guests dine beneath historic stone arches that merge rustic texture with uncluttered modern seating. The wine list draws heavily from top Viennese foothill estates to match the day’s freshly cooked meals. This steady combination of classic Austrian Heurigen cuisine and regional viticulture ensures a grounded, comfortable atmosphere throughout the evening.

Even upon entering the vaulted cellar, this pleasant blend of tradition and simple rusticity reveals itself. The selection of their own wines is abundant and classic. However, one should no longer expect a traditional Heuriger with a buffet display case here, as the focus is placed on the fresh preparation of the food – an advantage we already noticed with the delicious lukewarm artichoke salad with tomatoes and wild garlic. We would undoubtedly return for the crispy oven-roasted pork with smoked bacon, cracklings, and potato dumplings.
