The story

Weiler Laa an der Thaya: Traditional Austrian Cuisine Since 1908

The Kitchen and Its Heritage

At Weiler in Laa an der Thaya, traditional Austrian cooking anchors a historic Gasthaus operating since 1908. Martin Weiler now guides the kitchen, blending established culinary practices with contemporary techniques and regional produce. This deliberate focus on careful execution earned consistent praise from Gault&Millau reviewers. Guests frequently visit during weekday lunches to experience this grounded approach to Austrian cuisine firsthand.

Signature Dishes and Seasonal Focus

Pink braised veal arrives accompanied by a crisp vegetable julienne, a rich Krens sauce, and toasted pumpkin seed oil. Braised pork cheeks and roasted beef with wild mushrooms and marjoram gravy follow closely behind. The wine list balances established regional labels with newer selections to complement these hearty plates. Lunch crowds often reserve tables well in advance to secure a spot for these reliably executed meals.

The Dining Room and Weekend Gathering

The interior reflects the building’s long history as a working Wirtshaus without leaning into theatrical decor. Selected Sundays feature a relaxed brunch buffet where guests can sample lighter preparations alongside classic coffee service. Martin also opens his kitchen for themed cooking seminars, allowing visitors to observe techniques up close. The space functions as a practical hub for both daily nourishment and weekend celebration.

That the Gasthaus Weiler in the Laa/Thaya region is no secret gem for good food is proven by the numerous diners enjoying lunch (!) on weekdays (!) – making a reservation always advisable. The menu is clearly laid out, which is certainly no drawback, as evidenced by the careful preparation of each dish. The beef tartare is finely seasoned, and the medium-rare veal served with crisp vegetable julienne, horseradish sauce, and pumpkin seed oil is a standout. Equally delightful are the braised pork cheeks, veal sweetbreads, and roast beef with mushrooms, marjoram dumplings, and crispy fried potatoes. For a sweet finish, the quark and poppy seed dumplings proved convincing, as did the wine list with its excellent mix of new discoveries and classics.
