The story

Murmeli in Lech: Alpine Cooking Meets Gault & Millau Recognition

The kitchen and its chef

Murmeli sits high above Lech at 1,750 metres, where Chef Wolfgang Strauss leads an Austrian cuisine program focused on straightforward technique. His method combines established culinary traditions with lighter Italian cooking influences, creating a menu that feels familiar yet distinctly refined. The Gault & Millau guide awarded the venue 15 points last year, noting his reliable balance of hearty mountain fare and precise execution. Guests can expect a steady rotation of classic recipes executed without unnecessary fuss.

Signature plates and seasonal sweets

The lunch and dinner menus highlight robust regional proteins alongside delicate pasta work. Wolfgang Strauss prepares Tafelspitz until it falls apart, though the richer veal kidneys or tortellini stuffed with braised veal cheeks often draw consistent praise. Evening service frequently turns toward pastry, where current favorites include a crisp Pavlova layered with vanilla cream and pistachio ice. A recent chocolate terrine pairs bitter cocoa with fresh thyme and mango compote for a bright finish.

Alpine interiors and mountain views

Warm pear wood lines the dining room, grounding the space in the surrounding Arlberg landscape. Large glass doors open onto a sun terrace that serves as a natural meeting point for skiers returning from the pistes. When the afternoon chill sets in, guests shift to the fireplace lounge to unwind with a final drink. The architecture prioritizes acoustic comfort despite peak season crowds, allowing conversations to remain relaxed. This careful attention to material and layout reinforces the reputation of an Alpine kitchen that values substance over spectacle.

Finding a good lunch spot in Oberlech is not that easy. The small Murmeli, with its large (sunny) terrace, is probably one of the best places to go. Executive Chef Wolfgang Strauss offers an extensive selection of Austrian classics: from Tafelspitz – wonderfully tender but slightly dry due to the lack of a fat rim – to robustly seasoned veal kidneys, as well as several dishes from Italian cuisine such as tortellini stuffed with braised veal cheeks. Currently, the desserts are particularly outstanding: Pavlova with crispy meringue, delicate vanilla cream, and creamy pistachio ice cream, or an airy yet intense (dark) chocolate terrine with subtle thyme and fruity mango compote. Excellent wines, high-end prices, high noise level. Address: Oberlech 297, 6764 Lech am Arlberg, Austria. Contact: 05583 24 67, hotel@murmeli.at, https://www.murmeli.at/. Opening Hours: Daily 12–14 and from 20:00; see homepage. Open from late April to late November 2026. Team Wolfgang Strauss, Chef.
