The story

Wunderkammer Restaurant Lech: Refined Austrian Fine Dining

The Kitchen and its Traditions

Wunderkammer in Lech centers its approach on refined Austrian cooking, transforming regional recipes into precise fine dining plates. The kitchen operates within the Almhof Schneider property, where hosts Gerold and Katia Schneider have guided the family hospitality business since the late twentieth century. Their team prepares dishes that respect historical foundations while applying modern technique. Classic preparations appear alongside carefully sourced ingredients, keeping the focus on solid Austrian fare.

Plates and Pairings

A multi course progression often begins with gratinated snails or roasted bone marrow prepared according to established European standards. Soft brain finished with egg follows before moving toward heavier traditional Austrian kitchen staples like veal brain stew. Duck legs braised slowly in red wine provide a rich counterpoint to lighter starters. The cheese program imports selections such as Bernard Antony, adding international depth to an otherwise locally grounded menu.

The Designed Interior

Artist Paul Renner shaped the dining room to feel less like a commercial venue and more like a private residence. Elegant wooden staircases lead guests through spaces illuminated by carefully placed fixtures. Long standing staff member Josef Neulinger manages service from behind the bar and sommelier station, guiding diners through a cellar stocked with notable vintages. His expertise recently secured a 15.5 point rating from Gault&Millau, reflecting the careful curation that defines the evening.

Even without a huge appetite, you would be perfectly at home in the "Wonder Chamber." The long-serving maître d'hôtel and sommelier Josef Neulinger has once again been named Austria's "Sommelier of the Year." His expertise alone is reason enough to visit the restaurant designed by artist Paul Renner. The Almhof wine cellar is a true treasure trove of creations. To start: an elaborate table setting, gratinated snails, beautifully soft brain with egg, and roasted bone marrow à la St. John. Next: classic veal sweetbreads in cream sauce and duck leg braised in red wine that will make you fall in love. Here, Austrian culinary classics are prepared in fine-dining style. One is occasionally reminded of the "Steirereck am Pogusch" – except when it comes to cheese: that comes from Bernard Antony in France.
