The story

Haus am Hang St. Gilgen: A Refined Mediterranean Kitchen Overlooking the Wolfgangsee

The chef and the kitchen

Lucas Bocsa founded Haus am Hang in St. Gilgen around a straightforward philosophy he calls Luckys Goodest, which prioritizes premium ingredients paired with unpretentious creativity. His Mediterranean-inspired cooking avoids heavy technique, focusing instead on precise flavor combinations that land cleanly on the plate. Susanne Bocsa coordinates the service flow, introducing daily specials directly to guests while managing a carefully curated wine list. This steady partnership recently secured a 15 rating from Gault&Millau, a mark earned through consistent execution rather than temporary trends.

Seasonal plates and signature pairings

The written menu rotates with fresh discoveries, though Susanne often presents those daily selections tableside. Grilled scallops travel alongside smoked broccoli, while zander arrives with toasted fregola sarda and concentrated tomato elements. A robust Rossini-style beef tenderloin anchors the main courses, resting on truffle risotto beneath a reduced port wine glaze. These dishes demonstrate how Mediterranean cuisine translates effortlessly across seasonal boundaries.

Views and living room design

The dining room rests directly above the Wolfgangsee, positioning the water and distant peaks behind expansive glass panels. Interior styling favors comfortable living room textures over formal rigidity, accented by handpicked artwork and warm lighting. An updated outdoor terrace now features an Art Lounge arrangement that extends seating into the warmer months. Guests consistently choose this address for the uninterrupted sightlines combined with unhurried pacing.

What Lucas Bocsa and his wife Susanne serve at their Haus am Hang is a win for the Salzkammergut. Highly appealing concept, wonderful ambiance. But most importantly: outstanding, Mediterranean-inspired cuisine. Want some examples (and tips)? The foie gras starter is still relatively classic: brioche, cherries, celery. Exquisitely refined, yet decidedly classic. But then: grilled scallops are served with smoked broccoli, zander with Fregola Sarda and sun-dried tomatoes, rabbit with green asparagus. The main course returns to pure classicism. A homage to Steak Rossini: filet steak with foie gras and truffle risotto, young vegetables, and port wine glaze. And if you truly find nothing on the tasting menu, there are still a few real gems in the à la carte selection. Address: Mondsee-Bundesstraße 10, 5340 St. Gilgen, Austria.
