The story
On a quiet street in the heart of Antwerp, Bar Bulot brings a modern take on the classic brasserie. The restaurant is part of the Hertog Jan Restaurant Group, and its Antwerp location shares the same confident, unfussy approach to food as its sister houses in Zedelgem and Cadzand. The Michelin guide has recognised Bar Bulot with a Recommended distinction, and a glance at the menu shows why: this is cooking that understands tradition but isn’t afraid to play with it.
The kitchen works with seasonal produce, changing the lunch menu weekly. One week it might be a confit tomato with stracciatella – “zijdezachte kaas & zomerse tomaat” – finished with cornflowers from the garden. The next, a brandade of cod, creamy and rich, with a poached farm egg, hand-peeled shrimp and a champagne jus. There is a Bar Bulot Burger, served with cos lettuce and fresh fries, and a Boeuf Tonnato that reimagines vitello tonnato as a tartare of Berugirund beef with sourdough and a silky tuna cream. The dishes are direct, generous, and built on clear flavours.
The atmosphere is relaxed but polished. There is counter dining for those who want to watch the action in the kitchen, outdoor seating for warmer months, and the space is wheelchair accessible. Whether you come for a quick lunch – the lunch menu is €49 per person, including Lavazza coffee or tea – or a longer dinner, the service is professional without being stiff.
Bar Bulot has also launched a "Young at Heart" actiemenu, running from mid-April to mid-May: three courses with two drinks for €75 per person, featuring all-time Bar Bulot classics. It is a good introduction to the kitchen’s style – confident, seasonal, and rooted in the pleasure of eating well.
