The story

Chingu Antwerp Brings Authentic Korean Cooking to Historic Groenplaats

Origins near Groenplaats

Chingu in Antwerp delivers authentic Korean cooking to a compact space near Groenplaats. The founders selected a location steps from the main square to welcome neighborhood regulars. The name translates to friend in Korean, setting a clear expectation for how meals unfold here. Guests gather around tables designed for sharing small plates rather than ordering individual mains.

Bold sauces and grilled meats

The Korean kitchen builds every dish around contrasting textures and deep umami. Pillowy rice cakes simmer in glossy gochujang until they hold their shape but yield easily to the fork. Thinly sliced bulgogi arrives charred at the edges with sweet soy marinade clinging to tender beef. Every order includes complimentary banchan such as fermented kimchi, crisp seaweed salad, and pickled radish to balance the heat.

Critical recognition and a shared table

Critics noticed the precision quickly, placing the restaurant on the 2026 Le Fooding list within months of opening. The honor reflects a consistent menu rooted in traditional Korean cuisine while maintaining steady quality. Staff manage table pacing carefully so conversations flow without interruptions.

Hotspot alert! Since opening in September 2023 mere morsels away from Groenplaats, Chingu (“friend” in Korean) very quickly became the go-to for K-food fans. Here, nothing is lost, everything is shared… like the tteokbokki, a melee of pillowy little rice cakes glistening in glossy gochujang (red chili paste), worthy of a licking lips emoji! Or the bulgogi, made just like you’d find in Seoul, with tender chunks of marinated grilled beef, which go down easy with a perfectly cooked portion of rice and around eight banchan, those delicious side dishes which are a staple of Korean cuisine – kimchi, seaweed salad, pickled radishes… all complimentary with each dish. We’ll be back for sure. // Barbara Gù
