The story
Since 1962, Ciro's has been a fixture on the Antwerp dining scene, founded by former Red Devil footballer Albert De Herdt. This is a no-nonsense restaurant that prides itself on honest, unpretentious cooking – what the owners call "burgerkeuken" (home-style cuisine). In 2010, Gene Haesaerts took over and kept the spirit alive for twelve years before passing the torch to his trusted right hands: chef Claude Sondag and hostess Sabine Huyssen. They continue the tradition with warmth and consistency.
The menu reads like a greatest hits of Belgian brasserie cooking. The signature dish, Steak Ciro’s, has been a staple since 1960 – a straightforward, perfectly cooked steak that has become a local legend. But the kitchen does much more: Vol Au Vent De Luxe with veal sweetbreads and chicken in a mousseline sauce, homemade shrimp croquettes, and classic starters like toast with smoked eel and horseradish sauce, or escargots with garlic butter. For those who want the full experience, the "Ciroske" menu offers a three-course meal (tomato soup with meatballs, Steak Ciro’s, and café glacé) at a fair price.
Ciro’s is the embodiment of the Antwerp bourgondische spirit – generous, convivial, and relaxed. The dining room feels timeless, and when weather permits, the covered terrace is a favourite spot. The kitchen’s consistent quality and value earned it a Michelin Bib Gourmand, a recognition that praises good, affordable cooking. As the restaurant itself says: "There are still certainties." Ciro's is one of them.
