The story

Falafel Tof Antwerp: A Le Fooding Recognized Israeli Kitchen

The kitchen and its creator

Falafel Tof serves modern Israeli food from a compact counter on Hoogstraat in Antwerp. Chef Israël Ohana established the venue in 2014 after relocating to Belgium to join his partner. The operation earned a listing in Le Fooding for its disciplined approach to Israeli culinary standards. Ohana treats every ingredient as a building block rather than a garnish.

Signature plates and assembly method

Guests select a foundation of hummus, baba ganoush, or grilled eggplant before watching the falafels fry to order. Ohana tucks those hot circles into warm sourdough pita and layers roughly twenty pickled vegetables, fresh greens, and housemade spicy sauces. A final drizzle of plain tahini and a handful of mango or mint complete the sandwich. The assembly often overflows unless you limit the condiment additions. Sabich and shakshuka appear alongside a sturdy salad box for those who prefer their meals off bread.

The space and daily rhythm

The counter sits directly across from the constant stream of pedestrians passing through Antwerp’s commercial center. Visitors claim one of the outdoor tables to watch the steady flow of orders move from prep to packaging. The unchanging menu removes guesswork and highlights the versatility of Israeli vegetable preparation. Sautéed potatoes provide a simple complement to the heavier pita versions.

After coming to Antwerp to join his other half, Israël Ohana opened the vegan-veggie Falafel Tof in 2014 in the middle of the very busy Hoogstraat. Lick those chops and get a load of his furiously good Middle Eastern sandwiches! First choose your base – hummus, baba ganoush, grilled eggplant – then patiently wait for Israël to slide the falafels cooked to order into the bottom of their sourdough pita. Then top it off with your choice of around 20 pickles, vegetables and homemade spicy sauces. All drizzled with a squirt of plain tahini, plus mango or mint to finish: if it doesn’t overflow everywhere, that’s because you haven’t added enough toppings. Order some sautéed potatoes on the side, or ditch the pita and opt for a salad box version. Sabich and shakshuka complete the unchanging menu. B’ruchim Hab’-a’im! // Kiko Zushi
