The story
Ko'uzi is a word that fuses Japanese and Flemish sounds, hinting at the restaurant's philosophy: respectful craftsmanship with a local touch. This approach earned Ko'uzi a Michelin Bib Gourmand, a recognition for good quality and good value cooking in the heart of Antwerp. Chef Junko Kawada leads the kitchen, bringing her expertise to every piece of sushi.
Beyond the daily service, Chef Kawada shares her skills through sushi workshops. She teaches both hobbyists and professional cooks the art of rice preparation, fish handling, and shaping classic styles like temaki, hoso-maki, and nigiri. The workshops are held in English or French, offering an intimate way to deepen one's understanding of Japanese cuisine.
Ko'uzi occupies a modern space on Leopoldplaats, where guests can watch the street life while admiring seasonal Ikebana flower arrangements. The kitchen runs non-stop from 11am, with last orders at 5pm. The menu includes creative sushi – think ceviche of kingfish with chilli and coriander, or Wagyu beef carpaccio with sansho pepper – alongside traditional nigiri, maki, and sashimi assortments. There is also a selection of side dishes, desserts like dark chocolate mousse with saké, and drinks ranging from Japanese green tea to saké and wine.
The Michelin Bib Gourmand underlines the restaurant's commitment to offering refined Japanese sushi at a fair price – a combination that keeps both locals and visitors returning.
