The story

Mimis in Antwerp: A Cretan Kitchen Steps From Groenplaats

A Bright Refuge Near the Square

Mimis Antwerp occupies a sunny side street just off the lively Groenplaats district. Chef Mimis Lionakis runs a bright refuge for Cretan cooking in this compact space. The Greek kitchen prioritizes relaxed family tables over formal distance. Fresh Mediterranean light filters through the windows to warm the painted plaster walls. The open layout encourages easy conversation among regular patrons.

Shareable Bites and Island Traditions

The menu focuses on straightforward preparations that let quality ingredients speak. Creamy white tarama arrives lightly flavored with seaweed and generous portions of cured fish roe. Fried zucchini blossoms stuffed with herby rice sit beside a slow cooked bean stew in a deep tomato sauce. Grilled octopus salad provides a tender contrast when dressed with fresh parsley and onion.

Restorative Food and Quiet Recognition

Le Fooding placed the restaurant on its 2026 list for delivering meals that consistently lift the spirit. The service model supports both seated gatherings and quick takeaway counters. Regular visitors appreciate how the staff remembers dietary preferences without making the interaction feel scripted. This unpretentious style proves that contemporary Greek cooking thrives when it stays grounded.

You go see Mimis Lionakis for the same reason you go see your shrink: for a pick-me-up! Hidden down a side street a stone’s throw from the bustling sirtaki on Groenplaats, the Cretan chef’s sunny little hideaway serves uplifting cuisine made for sharing, that’s slicker than your average stuffed vine leaves from a can. The house specialty? Creamy white tarama, subtly flavored with seaweed, herbs and fat fish roe. Followed by some fried zucchini blossoms stuffed with herby rice; a cracking bean stew in a wonderfully tomatoey sauce; a delightfully simple lamb and spinach ragu; or even some tasty grilled octopus salad (the most tender we’ve ever tasted) seasoned with a parsley and onion vinaigrette. The cherry on the dákos? None of the food has anything to do with your Oedipus complex! // Juno Madre
