The story

Rocco: A Le Fooding Recognized Wine Bar in Antwerp

The Chef and the Kitchen

Rocco in Antwerp operates as a focused wine bar where Chef Frederik “Fre” Michiels directs the open kitchen. He sources vegetables and proteins directly from Pakt, Zilt En Zoet, and The Food Hub. The Italian-leaning kitchen favors bright acidity and precise seasoning over heavy sauces. Guests consistently note how the fresh ingredients shine through every preparation.

Small Plates and Bold Combinations

Guests share charred pimientos de Padrón finished with fleur de sel and lemon zest. The garlic butter escargot pastries swap traditional shells for layered puff pastry. Cacio e pepe haricot beans arrive tossed with guanciale for a rich, savory finish. Silky mashed potatoes accompany blood pudding and roasted apple slices.

Artists Behind the Venue

Owners Maud Van Haegenborgh and Marie-Charlot Vleminckx established this neighborhood spot near Boekenbergpark. Their visual arts background informs the quiet lighting and the carefully arranged serving boards. The Le Fooding listing highlights how their curated approach resonates with local food enthusiasts. Twelve wooden tables fill the room while diners watch preparations through the pass.

Seasonal Desserts and Evening Sips

The menu shifts toward autumnal notes when summer tomatoes yield to late-season cherry varieties. A crisp pizzetta topped with ‘nduja appears alongside chilled natural wines. Pear and almond tart closes the service with a clean, nutty sweetness that balances the heavier courses.

Things are a glug-glug-glugging over by Boekenbergpark, the Antwerp neighborhood on everyone’s lips. That’s where vinophile artists Maud Van Haegenborgh and Marie-Charlot Vleminckx set up their mind-blowing wine bar that’ll knock you for six, refueling the local in-crowd with their cool little snacks. Over in the open kitchen, chef Frederik “Fre” Michiels, who cut his teeth at De Superette (Ghent) and Bar Stan (Leuven), casts produce from the source of course (Pakt, Zilt En Zoet, The Food Hub), directing them in small plates for a dozen boozy tables: patterned pimientos de Padrón with fleur de sel and lemon zest; not-your-typical garlic butter escargot puff pastries that were finger lickin’ good; cacio e pepe haricot beans, served with guanciale – or basically carbonara, if you like; a more classic combo of silky smooth mashed potatoes, blood pudding and roasted apple; an outstanding pizzetta studded with cherry tomatoes (the very last of the season) and ‘nduja to really boost our happiness levels; before a delicious pear and almond tart for dessert. // Kiko Zushi
