The story
On the first floor of Koningin Astridplein in Bazel, just outside Antwerpen, Trattoria Bazalia brings the warmth and simplicity of an Italian trattoria to Belgium. The restaurant’s own description says it best: “Real Italian Food made with Passion!” – and that straightforward philosophy runs through everything they do.
The kitchen focuses on authentic Italian cuisine, built around pure Mediterranean flavours. Each month, a different Italian region takes the spotlight, so the menu changes regularly and offers a rotating selection of regional dishes. The restaurant describes its offering as a “keuze-menu & suggesties” – a choice menu with suggestions – and the food gallery shows plates that range from risotto and pasta in tomato sauce to delicate desserts and beautifully composed main courses. The atmosphere is deliberately relaxed and informal: “vlotte service, ongedwongen sfeer, zuiders vakantiegevoel” – efficient service, an easy-going mood, and a southern holiday feeling.
When the weather cooperates, the front terrace opens, allowing guests to dine outdoors. The restaurant is closed on Monday and Tuesday, though events can be arranged any day by request.
Trattoria Bazalia holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand, an award given to restaurants that offer good quality at a good value. The recognition fits naturally here: this is a place that prioritises honest cooking and a welcoming setting over unnecessary fuss. The Italian cuisine is the star, and the Bib Gourmand simply confirms what regulars already know.
