The story
On the Antwerp marina, with the MAS museum as a backdrop, U Eat & Sleep occupies a restored 1820 building by architect Pierre Bruno Bourla. Owners Hans Otten and Colette van Remortel—a radio and television maker and a pilot—opened the doors in 2017, bringing their hospitality concept to life.
The restaurant, known simply as U Eat, serves French-inspired modern cuisine that changes with the seasons. The kitchen works with fresh, daily produce, turning out dishes that balance refinement with straightforward elegance. On the à la carte menu you might find a steak tartare with horseradish and aged egg yolk, or an entrecôte Black Angus with béarnaise. Seafood features prominently, from Zeeuwse mussels in a vin jaune sauce to a catch of the day prepared according to the chef’s inspiration. For those who prefer a guided experience, the U Enjoy degustation menu offers four or five courses—sashimi salmon, white asparagus, the day’s catch, and a dessert such as strawberries Romanoff.
The dining room shares its address with a luxury boutique hotel and a cocktail bar, each separate but part of the same whole. Guests can stay overnight or simply come for lunch, dinner, or a drink. The atmosphere is calm and polished, with service that aims for warm, personal attention—something guests consistently mention in their reviews.
In 2026, the restaurant earned a Michelin Recommendation, a nod to its consistent quality and the careful execution of its modern cuisine. It is a place where the owners’ travels to London, New York, and Barcelona are felt not in gimmicks but in a confident, unhurried approach to hospitality.
Whether you sit down for a lunch menu or a full tasting, the setting—water, historic architecture, and a lively marina—makes every meal feel like an occasion. U Eat & Sleep is a welcome addition to Antwerp’s dining scene, proving that a restaurant can be both ambitious and genuinely welcoming.
