The story
Churrasqueira Portugalia brings authentic Portuguese cooking to Brussels, operating as a Le Fooding listed rotisserie since its origins as a Saint-Gilles takeaway. Manuel Peixoto acquired the concept in 2017 and expanded the operation to serve seated guests alongside the original grab-and-counter model. The kitchen centers on wood-fired spits and heavy grills, preserving traditional Portuguese methods over direct heat. Cooks manage the open flames while regular locals wait nearby for their orders.
Saturday service draws visitors specifically for the whole-roasted suckling pig, which arrives with crisp crackling and tender meat alongside homemade chips. Other staples include bifanas, simple crusty rolls filled with seasoned pork cutlet or roasted pig, occasionally paired with sharp mustard. The menu shifts toward lighter coastal preparations like octopus a lagareiro, plated with boiled potatoes, green olives, and garlic oil. Guests typically close the meal with an orange-infused crème brûlée.
A compact dining room sits just past the main counter and active kitchen area near Porte de Hal. Customers place orders at a bustling front desk before moving to tables that overlook the cooking zone. The narrow footprint allows guests to watch the open kitchen without crowding the walkway. Staff navigate the multilingual crowd with ease, maintaining a steady service rhythm.
