The story

La Général: Le Fooding-Listed Mexican Kitchen in Brussels Ixelles

Roots and rhythm in Ixelles

La Général anchors a corner of Ixelles with a vibrant Mexican kitchen shaped by Belgian-Mexican roots. Restaurateurs Amandine-Darmstaedter and her brother Tom opened the cantina in 2023, channeling Amandine's dual heritage into a menu that honors tradition while adapting to local sensibilities. The interior signals warmth through midnight blue walls, vintage furniture, and clusters of votive candles arranged beside framed images of the Virgin Mary. Patrons can choose between the cozy indoor tables and the outdoor terrace, which fills easily during evening service.

Plancha technique and seasonal plates

The cooking centers on the plancha, where proteins receive a sharp sear over intense heat before resting on the pass. Appetizers highlight sea bream ceviche tossed with cucumber and escabèche, accompanied by homemade totopos that bring a rustic crunch to the bowl. Tacos al pastor feature marinated pork layered with charred onion and sweet pineapple slices, delivering a balance of smoke and sugar. Angus flank steak arrives under a blanket of roasted peppers, while halloumi and black bean chalupitas offer a robust vegetarian choice dressed with lime, avocado, and chili. This style of Mexican cooking rewards guests with textured, flavor-forward plates. The dessert course rounds out the experience with cardamom and vanilla churros bathed in pomegranate and hibiscus syrup.

Cocktails and critical acclaim

Drinks match the energy of the kitchen, with the bar crafting both classics and regional twists. The signature clamato mixes beer with spicy tomato juice and fresh lime, providing a savory counterpoint to heavy dishes. Margaritas remain a steady favorite for those who prefer citrus brightness. Le Fooding included La Général in its 2026 listing, noting the unbeatable clamato and the mouthwatering quality of the ceviche. This recognition highlights the establishment's ability to maintain high standards across every element of service.

Midnight blue walls, vintage decor, images of the Virgin Mary and votive candles… In this welcoming cantina opened in 2023 by the Belgian-Mexican restaurateur Amandine-Darmstaedter and Tom, her brother and partner, we raise our glasses of margaritas or their unbeatable clamato (beer with spicy tomato juice and lime). Before digging in to a mouthwatering sea bream ceviche with cucumber, escabèche and totopos (homemade corn chips); tacos al pastor with marinated pork, onion and pineapple, an incredibly tender affair; Angus flank steak grilled on the plancha and served under peppers; or some stunning grilled halloumi and black bean chalupitas served with lime, avocado and chili. And to round out this mexicano trip, cardamon and vanilla churros, bathed in pomegranate and hibiscus syrup. // Rémi Nigaut
