The story
At L'esprit Bouddha, the kitchen is led by a chef whose work is the centrepiece of the experience. The restaurant, located on Place des Martyrs in Gosselies, welcomes guests to "dégustez le travail de notre chef dans un environnement confortable" – taste the chef’s work in a comfortable environment. This philosophy has earned the restaurant a place in the Michelin guide, where it is recognised as a Recommended address.
The menu is a focused selection of Chinese cuisine, with dishes that range from classic to refined. Starters include a carpaccio of tuna with soy sauce and black sesame oil, steamed shrimp and basil bites, and a chawanmushi made with seasonal vegetables. For those seeking a warm entrée, the lobster gyoza with tomato ponzu and the half-cooked salmon tataki with teriyaki and pine nuts stand out.
The main courses are where the kitchen shows its range. Peking duck is offered at 36,00 EUR, alongside dishes like crispy chicken in sweet-and-sour sauce, General Tao’s chicken, and a wok of organic vegetables with Japanese curry. Seafood options include scampi in red Thai curry with coconut milk and organic vegetables, a tempura of the day’s fish, and a ti-pan of monkfish with garlic, ginger and chilli. Meat lovers will find a ti-pan of Irish cuberoll with barbecue sauce and diced Ibérico pluma seasoned with Chinese spices and served with organic vegetables.
The setting is straightforward and welcoming, with outdoor seating available for warmer months. The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner from Monday to Friday, closed Wednesday evening, Saturday and Sunday. Note that the kitchen cannot accommodate vegan diets or soy allergies.
For a taste of refined Chinese cooking in Charleroi, L'esprit Bouddha delivers a menu that is both honest and ambitious.
