The story

LUMA: Modern French Bistronomie in Charleroi – Michelin Recommended

LUMA: Bistronomie with Character in Nalinnes

Just outside Charleroi, in the quiet town of Nalinnes, LUMA brings a refreshing take on Modern French cuisine. The restaurant describes itself as “bistronomique” – a place where the conviviality of a bistro meets the precision of fine dining. The team’s philosophy is clear: refined terroir pleasures, authentic flavours, and elegant cooking without pretension. This approach has already earned LUMA a spot in the Michelin guide, a recognition that feels less like a formal accolade and more like a natural confirmation of the kitchen’s daily work.

The atmosphere is warm, relaxed, and genuinely welcoming. The dining room invites you to settle in for an evening built around seasonal, locally sourced ingredients. The menu changes frequently, but recent offerings give a strong sense of the kitchen’s style. Starters might include an omble chevalier with morels and a mousseline of vin jaune, or a green asparagus tagliatelle with Stilton emulsion. Mains range from caramelised lamb with an oregano potato emulsion to a marbled cod with saffron, turmeric risotto, and hazelnuts. There is also a vegetarian option that changes with the season.

LUMA offers two tasting menus – four courses at €65 or six at €90 – which showcase the kitchen’s creativity and balance. The wine list evolves constantly, selected to complement each dish. Desserts are made in-house; a sablé tonka pistache with poached pear and pistachio ice cream, or a Gariguette strawberry dessert with hibiscus curd, are typical of the finish. A chariot of Belgian cheeses is also available.

The restaurant operates with a small, dedicated team, and the service is personal without being fussy. With private dining available and outdoor seating in warmer months, LUMA suits both special occasions and a simple, excellent weekday meal. It is the kind of place that earns its recommendation through consistency, clarity, and a genuine love for what it does.

Nestled inside a charming little maison de maître , complete with two cozy dining rooms, a kitchen that plays peekaboo with the veranda, a well-kept garden and a bar tucked under a vaulted brick ceiling, Luma feels like a lifeline. No, not from rising sea levels or climate change, but from something far more immediate: an ocean of suburban ugliness unapologetically whipped by the nearby Bultia shopping center. The kind of place that makes you lose all hope. And yet, like a poppy piecing through the concrete, this visually soothing oasis orchestrated by Lucas Vanderschueren (ex-Tribeca in Gerpinnes) and Maxime Urbain (ex-Villain and Atelier de Bossimé) puts a big smile back on your face. It’s nothing flashy, no, just dishes that awaken the senses. The day we went for lunch, seated in the dining room opening out on to the lush green garden, we were treated to: white asparagus lined neat in a row, enrobed in smoked salmon, resting on a bed of sorrel and Korean mint pesto; followed by a potato pressé served with Parmesan-stuffed morels and seasonal veg deglazed with port and butter from Ferme de Wungaert (located a mere five minutes away); and for the sweet finale, rhubarb stewed in red wine, yogurt ice cream and macadamia nut crumble – the perfect ending to set the record straight. · Frans Simoens
