The story
In the heart of Mechelen, on Begijnenstraat, Graspoort operates as a self-described “refreshed urban sanctuary.” The atmosphere is described as peaceful yet vibrant, casual yet refined—a balance that has earned it a Michelin Recommended distinction. This is a place where the dining room’s energy meets a kitchen focused on “new world cuisine,” a creative French and Fusion approach built on local and seasonal products.
Behind the restaurant are two figures with deep roots in Belgian hospitality. Stephanie, a Mechelen native, brings a vibrant, people-first energy honed over nine years as a manager at ‘Goe Gedacht in Haacht. Her business partner, Chef Thibault, has built an impressive resumé working as sous-chef to Yves Mattagne at Sea Grill and at the Melchior in Tienen. Together, they combine over twenty years of experience.
The menu is a tasting format, the most extensive being a five-course selection. Dishes change with the seasons, but examples from the kitchen show a clear, confident hand: starters like Hamachi with sesame, cucumber, and avocado give way to mains such as Iberico pork with kimchi, mash, and jus, or a choice of dorade with dashi and smoked eel. A cheese board from Van Tricht is available as a supplement. The wine list is equally considered, offering thoughtful pairings by the glass or bottle, with a pairing formula available to complement the meal.
Graspoort is open Tuesday through Saturday evenings, closed Sunday and Monday.
