The story

Lekker Huis: Authentic Northern Chinese Cuisine in Mechelen

The Kitchen and Regional Methods

Lekker Huis brings authentic Chinese cuisine to Mechelen through a dedicated family operation. The kitchen focuses on recipes from North China and Shanghai, with a single chef preparing every component from scratch. This dedication to traditional Chinese cooking secured a place on the 2026 Le Fooding list, where reviewers highlighted the careful layering of ginger and cinnamon across the menu. Visitors frequently consult the Mandarin selection to access the most grounded staples.

House Specialties and Daily Plates

The menu balances robust street-style fare with refined home cooking. Crispy sweet and sour pork arrives with a sharp vinegar reduction, while the roasted leg of lamb is carved thin and seasoned with coarse spices. Earthy roasted vegetables appear in the Di San xian, and soft house-made tofu simmers in a savory broth. Every entrée rests beside a distinctive pink four-grain rice blend that introduces a gentle nutty finish.

A Quiet Dining Room

Green, red, and yellow painted walls enclose a space that values substance over ornamentation. A framed portrait of Prince Laurent rests near the entrance, marking the quiet local reputation this establishment has maintained for years. The owners handle service personally, fostering a relaxed atmosphere where families gather and conversation moves at its own pace. Regulars keep returning for the straightforward hospitality and consistent execution.

Between its green, red and yellow walls, Lekker uis (“gourmet house” for those whose Dutch is a bit rusty) bears a photo of Prince Laurent of Belgium who, it is said, often asks his Chinese-speaking adviser to place an order for him here. On the menu (thanks Google translate!), you’ll find a selection of typical dishes from Northern China and Shanghai: “lion’s head,” a kind of big meatball with a foamy texture; whole roast leg of lamb, sliced and perfectly seasoned; and lightly fried tofu pâté with a hint of cinnamon, ginger and sesame. Special mention for the beautifully pink four-grain rice mix served on the side. Everything’s good, so go ahead and order blindly! // Rocky Simone
