The story
Just steps from the Church of Our Lady on the market square in Bonheiden, Tabernakel takes its name from the sacrament house – the most sacred part of a church. The connection is playful: where a church safeguards the host, this restaurant offers its own daily bread. But any resemblance to the Catholic Church, the owners note, is purely coincidental.
Steven Mispelters, Bart Mispelters and hostess Kim VanderAerschot bring more than thirty years of combined practical experience to the table. Steven and Bart work in the kitchen, selecting the freshest products with known origins and a local edge. They use modern techniques alongside ancient methods such as fermentation, building textures and flavours that alternate in thoughtful combinations. Kim, described as “the cheerfulness herself,” selects the drinks and ensures guests feel genuinely cared for.
The menu is built around the Angelus and Eden tasting menus, available in four, five or six courses. Each menu centres on seasonal ingredients and refined techniques, offering a harmony of flavours. Lunch and à la carte options are also available. The cooking style is best described as French with a International outlook – rooted in regional produce but open to global influences.
The restaurant’s philosophy is clear: top products, unique treatment, and a total experience. The team works only with selected regional products whose origin they know, and they treat those ingredients with the precision they deserve.
Tabernakel’s commitment to quality has earned it a Michelin Recommended award, a mark of the consistency and ambition that defines the kitchen. The restaurant is also listed in the Gault&Millau guide.
Reservations are required, and the dining room is open for dinner, with private parties and outdoor seating available in warmer months. The atmosphere is relaxed yet refined – a place where a carefully crafted meal and a genuinely warm welcome are the only priorities.
