Mokosh Restaurant Split: Mediterranean Dining in a Historic Villa Garden

Architecture and Garden

Mokosh brings seasonal Mediterranean cooking to a historic garden just minutes from Split’s Old Town. The restaurant occupies Villa Tončić, a protected early twentieth century residence where an Art Nouveau facade opens onto a shaded Mediterranean courtyard. Tall trees, a central fountain, and planted islands create a quiet setting that separates guests from the city streets. The interior earned the SBID International Design Excellence Award, marking the first time a Croatian dining room has received this recognition for its spatial composition.

The Kitchen and Chef

Chef Đorđe Marković directs a kitchen that follows the rhythm of the Adriatic coast and Dalmatian seasons. His approach treats technique as a tool to clarify natural flavors rather than complicate them. Pasta and bread arrive fresh each morning, while longer preparations develop quietly in the background. This method supports a menu built around sharing plates and seasonal availability.

Seasonal Highlights

The dinner service features dishes like the 24-hour suckling pig confit marinated with sea water and wild herbs before being roasted until crisp. Fish selections include a whole deboned sea bass roasted in olive oil or a traditional buzara combining scampi, mussels, and clams in white wine and tomato. Gault&Millau specifically notes the refined take on Dalmatian cod alla bianco, finished with a parmesan film and olives. Mediterranean sweets lean toward local traditions, such as a Dubrovnik style crème caramel called rožata or a warm pistachio soufflé served with vanilla gelato.
