The story
In the heart of Tallinn’s Rotermann quarter, R14 occupies a former power plant that once lit the surrounding streets. Today, the historic limestone shell holds a wine restaurant that has earned a place in the Michelin Guide Estonia every year since 2022. The interior lets the building’s original details shine—rough stone walls and industrial bones are balanced with warm materials and colour, creating a relaxed yet refined atmosphere.
R14 grew out of a partnership with Rein Kasela Winery, and the restaurant’s soul is its wine list. Chef Helen Andema works closely with the sommeliers to build dishes that complement the glass rather than compete with it. The cooking is clear and modern, drawing on Mediterranean cuisine without overcomplicating things. Start with kataifi frog’s legs with lime labneh, or a pizzette topped with burrata, mortadella, and tomato-infused kimchi sauce. Larger plates range from a spicy tomato seafood casserole to grilled lamb tenderloin with salsa verde, or a T-bone steak with truffle and garlic spread. A short but thoughtful selection of sides and desserts—Basque chocolate cheesecake with plum compote, or feta in crispy filo with passionfruit jam—rounds out the meal.
The wine-by-the-glass list changes regularly and covers Champagne, Sancerre, Nebbiolo, and lesser-known finds from Italy, France, and Spain. The restaurant also offers wine tastings, trainings, and a shop where you can buy bottles to take home. With its generous space, R14 hosts private events without losing the easy-going service that regulars return for.
Whether you come for a quick glass after work or a long dinner, the mood stays unhurried and genuinely welcoming.
