The story
On Kauba 11, a blue door marks the entrance to Fellin, a café and restaurant that has been quietly redefining Viljandi’s dining scene for over a decade. The interior—built from salvaged materials and restored furniture—reflects a philosophy of thoughtful simplicity. Here, families, couples, and travellers all feel equally at home.
In spring 2022, the Michelin Guide awarded Fellin a Bib Gourmand, its seal of approval for good quality, good value cooking. The award underscores what locals have long known: Fellin’s kitchen turns fresh, seasonal Estonian ingredients into dishes that are both honest and refined.
The menu changes with the seasons, drawing on produce from nearby farms and waters. Starters like beef carpaccio with ash mayonnaise or roasted mushrooms with lentils and Jerusalem artichoke foam showcase the kitchen’s precision. Mains range from Võrtsjärve pike perch with root celery and seafood sauce to Iberico pork schnitzel with potato-parsley purée. The bread, made with sourdough and rye, is baked in-house and served with herb butter.
Desserts are equally inventive: bread ice cream with beetroot and blackcurrant gel, or a passion fruit “snowball soup” with vanilla sauce. The drinks list features selectively chosen wines and artisanal Estonian beverages, including Kokomo coffee.
Writer Aivar Hanson calls Fellin’s menu “one of the most interesting in Estonia,” while authors Viivi Luik and Jaak Jõerüüt describe it as “delightful, intelligent and charming.” The restaurant’s commitment to sustainability earned it the Green Key environmental label in 2023.
Fellin’s private room seats up to 30 guests, ideal for business lunches, family celebrations, or seminars. The team also caters off-site and offers takeaway of their homemade bread and selected drinks. Special events, like the summer concert dinner at Viljandi’s Lossimäed, bring together chefs from across the region for multi-course feasts with live music.
Whether for a quick lunch or a leisurely evening, Fellin remains a cornerstone of Viljandi’s food culture—a place where every dish tells a story of place and season.
