The story
La Mère Germaine is an institution in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, founded in 1922 by Germaine Vion, a former cook at the Élysée Palace. Her talent and personality made it a legendary stop on the Route Nationale 7, frequented by figures like Mistinguett and Jean Gabin. In 2020, new owners Isabelle and Arnaud Strasser undertook a complete renovation, preserving the soul of this historic house.
The restaurant’s modern cuisine is led by chef Julien Thomasson. His menu draws inspiration from the terroirs of Provence, the Rhône Valley, and the Mediterranean, focusing on respect for the product and creative expression. The result is a sensory journey through the region’s best ingredients. This commitment to quality earned the restaurant a Michelin star in the 2026 guide, a recognition of its high-quality cooking.
Dining at La Mère Germaine is an immersive experience. The restaurant’s atmosphere reflects the elegance of Provence, with a backdrop of the village and its famous vineyards. For a more spontaneous meal, Le Comptoir offers a lively bistrot experience with chef Emilio Arriaga’s seasonal dishes and a carefully selected wine list. Whether in the gastronomic dining room or on the terrace, the focus remains on genuine flavors and generous hospitality.
