The story
On the main square of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Le Comptoir de la Mère Germaine offers a relaxed, welcoming alternative to its celebrated gastronomic sibling. Conceived by Isabelle and Arnaud Strasser as a place for sharing and conviviality, this bistro is a casual gourmet stop in the heart of the village.
The kitchen is led by chef Emilio Arriaga Dora, an Ecuadorian-born cook with a deep passion for French cuisine. After a decade spent refining his craft in several Vaucluse restaurants, he now commands the open kitchen and its large rotisserie. His cooking is described as colourful and flavourful, drawing on South American influences while staying rooted in seasonal Vaucluse produce. The result is a family-style, bistronomic menu that changes with the seasons.
The space itself is designed for exchange: diners can watch the chefs at work, and the team is happy to talk about the local ingredients and wines. The wine list naturally highlights the great terroirs of Châteauneuf-du-Pape and beyond. When the weather permits, the terrace offers a panoramic view over the appellation’s vineyards.
For private meals, a dedicated room seats up to 14 people, suitable for family gatherings or business events. This approachable, ingredient-driven bistro has earned a place in the Michelin guide, further affirming its quality and consistency.
