The story

Chalet des Joux: A Recognized Alpine Bistro in La Clusaz

The Owner and the Kitchen

Chalet des Joux functions as a reliable mountain bistro positioned directly along the slopes of La Clusaz. Romand Fournier manages the floor himself, offering a warm reception that keeps the atmosphere comfortably unhurried. He builds a naturalist wine program to complement a kitchen that prioritizes solid technique over modern experimentation. The outdoor terrace captures strong afternoon light, setting a clear rhythm for lunch service before the evening crowds arrive.

Classic Preparations

The bistro kitchen centers on established regional standards handled with deliberate care. Guests order a traditional Swiss fondue accompanied by golden roasted new potatoes, while the Alsatian knack sausage arrives in genuine casing beside hand-cut fries. Butchered cuts undergo a direct flame char at the dining table, creating a smoky crust that pairs neatly with a dense crème caramel dessert. Every plate follows a straightforward structure that rewards patience.

Timber Interiors and Weeknight Service

Inside, the dining room wraps around sturdy wooden tables, matching chairs, and full wall paneling anchored by a central wood fire. This enclosed space operates exclusively on Friday and Saturday evenings, requiring advance booking when demand peaks. The steady consistency of these everyday dishes recently secured a listing in the Le Fooding guide, validating how effectively this small bistro maintains its standards through the winter season.

The view isn’t incredible (it’s not disappointing either, it’s just your average view of the slopes), but that’s our only real complaint…. Because frankly, everything else is outstanding: the sun that strikes the terrace at noon on the dot; the healthy glow of its clientele – the day we went, it included Isabelle Huppert, Emmanuel Renaut, Edouard Loubet…; the naturalist wine menu, a rarity in the world of winter sports; the warm welcome from the beanie-wearing owner, Romand Fournier, who knows or knows of everybody present… And best of all, the menu that showcases great classics prepared with extra care: a classic Swiss fondue with perfectly roasted new potatoes; Alsatian knack sausage made using real sausage casing, with homemade fries; meats that get flame-charred in front of you; dreamy crème caramel for dessert… But FYI, the indoor restaurant (wooden tables, wooden chairs, wood-paneled walls, a wood fire) is only open Friday and Saturday evenings. Reservations are advised, but the line is often busy… Good luck! // Lionel Clarck
