The story

Les Sardines à la Plage in Lancieux: A Coastal Bistro by the Sea

The kitchen and the founders

Les Sardines à la Plage in Lancieux has operated as a neighborhood bistro since 2014. Owners Adélaïde and Grégory Perissel split their time between this venue and Les Deux Sardines in Saint-Briac-sur-Mer. Adélaïde now runs the open kitchen, directing prep and service from the center of the room. Their consistent quality earned a recent Le Fooding listing, which highlights the straightforward cooking style.

The setting and the terrace

The building started as a lifeguard station on Saint-Sieu beach before becoming a dining room. Wooden tables line the terrace where diners watch the tide roll past. Large windows frame the water while the open kitchen lets guests hear the grill work. Natural light fills the space during summer months, making it easy to settle in for a leisurely meal.

The menu and cooking style

Buckwheat blinis topped with pulled pork and tomme cheese anchor the Breton selections on the board. Cancale oysters arrive raw alongside grilled sardines dressed in a creamy feta sauce. The kitchen also plates a spiced chicken shawarma with preserved lemon and a Thai salad featuring marinated fish and peanuts. Red berry pavlova and homemade granola with watermelon provide sweet endings at this coastal bistro.

Adélaïde and Grégory Perissel are seeing double! Owners of Les Deux Sardines in Saint-Briac-sur-Mer, the couple has also been keeping busy in Lancieux since 2014. Here, Adélaïde the chef has set up her open kitchen inside a former lifeguard station on Saint-Sieu beach, cooking up some quality fast food on the terrace with views of the sea. Served à la carte, you’ll find Breton-inspired dishes: pulled pork and tomme cheese from La Ferme de La Renaudais on buckwheat blinis; fine oysters from Cancale; grilled sardines with cream of feta. Yet other dishes come from elsewhere: well-seasoned chicken shawarma with hummus and preserved lemon; a Thai salad made with marinated fish, sesame, soy and peanuts; or a salad of green wheat, hummus, eggplant, chickpeas and fromage blanc with za’atar. Not to mention the comforting red berry pavlova, or the profiterole-style cream puff, or even fromage blanc with homemade granola and watermelon, for dessert. // M.B.
