The story
On the lively quai Turenne in Nantes' Feydeau district, Sépia brings a fresh, responsible approach to French gastronomy. The restaurant, recognised by the Michelin guide for its refined and flavourful cooking, is built around a simple conviction: great food starts with great ingredients, sourced as close as possible.
Sépia’s kitchen is led by a chef who works with local farmers, foragers and breeders to source produce that is largely organic. The menu changes regularly with the seasons and what is available, ensuring each dish is a true reflection of the moment. The cooking is creative, rooted in French tradition but with delicate Mediterranean influences – think tataki of beef with rose harissa, or ravioles of Breton clams in a brown-butter dashi.
The restaurant offers two parallel tasting sequences: one animal, one vegetable. Both are available at lunch and dinner, and the vegetable sequence is carefully composed, with options suitable for vegans. Dishes such as “Hot spring” – a slow-cooked egg with smoked pea cream and sobrassada – or “Bbq vg” – oyster mushroom ribs with spelt risotto and pecorino – show the kitchen’s ability to make vegetables as compelling as meat.
The dining room is elegant and welcoming, and when the weather allows, the terrace is a favourite spot. The wine list is a carefully curated selection of natural wines, mostly from the Loire and beyond, with many available by the glass. There are also house-made cocktails, craft beers from local brewery Aerofab, and a thoughtful range of non-alcoholic drinks.
Sépia is open for lunch Tuesday to Friday, and for dinner Tuesday to Saturday. It is closed Sunday and Monday. The restaurant also caters for private events and group dinners, and offers takeaway and delivery. Whether you come for a midday lunch or a full evening sequence, the experience is one of genuine hospitality and precise, honest cooking – exactly the kind of table that makes Nantes a destination for food lovers.
