The story

Chez Davia: Bib Gourmand Niçoise Restaurant in Nice Since 1953

Chez Davia in Nice: A Family Tradition Since 1953

Since 1953, Chez Davia has been a fixture on rue Grimaldi in the heart of Nice, a family-run restaurant now in its third generation. The kitchen looks to the great culinary traditions of the region, while each generation adds its own touch. This is a restaurant that values sincerity on the plate — generous, unfussy cooking that puts the flavour of the ingredient first. The spirit of Niçoise cuisine is alive here, and the restaurant’s commitment to it has earned a Michelin Bib Gourmand, an award that recognises good quality, good value cooking.

Among the house specialities are daube niçoise, barbajuans (the region’s stuffed fritters), and a classic tarte au citron. The menu also changes with the seasons, offering suggestions that follow what’s freshest. Alongside these dishes, Chez Davia serves a menu of Niçoise classics, all made in-house with fresh produce.

The atmosphere is simple and warm, the kind of place that has welcomed both locals and visitors for over seventy years. It’s a living address, faithful to its identity and to the convivial spirit of the table. Whether you’re here for a slow lunch on the terrace or a dinner in the cozy dining room, the welcome is genuine. Chez Davia is a true taste of Nice, one family’s legacy served plate after plate.

Terrazzo tile floors, a flashy chandelier and gingham tablecloths set the scene… After starting his career in a few Michelin-starred kitchens (Ducasse in Monaco, Troisgros in Tokyo…), Pierre Altobelli decided to revitalize his family’s bistro, which was originally opened by Davia, his grandmother, back in 1953. Led by the chef’s mother, the young, enthusiastic team sends out bistro dishes with a Côte d’Azur twist. The other night: plump barbajuans – fried ravioli stuffed with chard, lovage and ricotta; an earthy rabbit and sage terrine; shockingly good marinated anchovies over a bed of tapenade and roasted peppers; before a radiant lemon tart. A few other Nice treats that we noticed on nearby tables included fried baby squid and a beef stew with porcini mushrooms from the backcountry… // A.A.
