The story
Comptoir du Marché sits at the very heart of Vieux-Nice, on the lively rue du Marché between the Porte Fausse and the Palais de Justice. Inside, the restaurant unfolds in two distinct moods: a bistro area with a wooden counter, panelling and vintage lighting, and a retro grandmother’s kitchen next door, where formica tables, vintage fridge doors and old utensils from Nice’s flea markets create a completely different spirit. The terrace, meanwhile, offers the typical atmosphere of the street itself. The restaurant has earned a Michelin Recommended distinction for its consistent, heartfelt cooking.
The chef describes his profession as “a living profession and, above all, a profession for sharing.” He is keen to pass on that passion to his team and to customers through his vision of seasonal cuisine. The boss, Alsatian by birth and Niçoise by adoption, started the Comptoir in 2011. She sees the restaurant as a warm, friendly bistro where the food is “both classic and up to date, always inspired by family recipes” that remind her of her Alsatian roots. The head waiter, trained in London, brings the same values of sharing and generosity to the front of house.
The food is Mediterranean and seasonal, prepared according to what the team finds at the market every morning. Dishes change constantly, inspired by the day’s ideas, childhood memories and previous experiences in France. On any given day, you might choose between pâté en croûte or grilled calamari with artichokes, a lean fish medallion with cockles and rosemary mashed potatoes, or a beef stew. The cuisine is generous, refined and made from fresh, local products – a pure expression of the Mediterranean spirit that defines this corner of Nice.
