The story
In the small town of La Roche-Bernard, near Nivillac, a 17th-century hôtel particulier tells a story of travel and transformation. The Auberge des Deux Magots takes its name from two monkey statues (magots) that adorn the facade – a legacy of an explorer-owner who brought them back from a distant voyage. Since 2015, this house of character has been a restaurant where history meets contemporary dining.
The restaurant is built around stone walls and an atmosphere of quiet authenticity. Chef Ludovic Le Forestier, a native of central Brittany, runs the kitchen with a focus on fresh, local ingredients. His cuisine is described as instinctive, changing with the seasons. This commitment to quality and value earned the restaurant a Bib Gourmand from the Michelin Guide in 2016, a distinction it continues to hold. The award highlights “good quality, good value cooking” – a fitting description for the generous, precise dishes served here.
Chef Le Forestier works alongside sommelier Johnny, who guides guests through wine pairings, and pastry chef Anne, who creates the desserts. Together, they offer a dining experience that feels both personal and unhurried. The restaurant can also host private events in a separate salon for up to 25 guests, with custom menus devised by the chef.
Menus are structured around the time of day and the day of the week. For lunch, served Tuesday and Friday midday, the “Formules du midi” offer a choice at 26€ for two courses or 32€ for three courses. In the evening and on weekends, the options expand: the “Menu des Vieux Quartiers” at 42€, the “Menu Plaisir” at 55€ with more choices, and the “Menu Tentation” at 65€, which includes fish and a meat course. All menus come with feuilletés, amuse-bouches, and mignardises. The cuisine is modern French, rooted in the seasons and the local landscape.
