The story

Mamenakane in Perpignan: Seasonal French-Japanese Cooking

The chef and her roots

Mamenakane in Perpignan presents a French-Japanese cuisine shaped by Chef Maiko Ike’s journey from western Osaka. After years training in Parisian and Japanese professional kitchens, she settled here to blend regional sourcing with her own heritage. The restaurant’s name translates to “how are you?” in a Japanese dialect, reflecting the quiet welcome that greets guests at this intimate address. Every dish carries the steady confidence of a cook who understands both tradition and personal history.

A menu built around local producers

The kitchen prepares a unique daily menu featuring vegetables from nearby market gardens, fish caught by small local boats, and meat from sustainable regional farms. Guests often encounter silky smoked eggplant velouté paired with anchovy and roasted cashews, followed by duck tartare served alongside beetroot ice cream and dukkah. Red mullet arrives glazed in a pepper-forward fish jus, while free-range chicken is finished with Capcir porcini mushrooms. This Japanese-inflected French cooking relies on precise technique rather than heavy seasoning.

Space and seasonal finishes

The dining area feels comfortably unpretentious, anchored by sturdy Bruno Rey chairs that encourage lingering conversation. Evening service flows through a six-course progression that leaves room for thoughtful finishes like mel i mató steeped in apricot and jasmine tea. Some evenings close with a rousquille biscuit reimagined using lemon, fresh figs, and dried leaves. Recent guide listings confirm this seasonal French cooking delivers consistently sharp flavors without needing grand gestures.

Since you ask, Mamenakane (“how are you?” in a Japanese dialect)… Things are better than good at this secret hideaway, set up by Kotaro and Maiko Ike, who left their native Japan half a dozen years ago for Paris and then Perpignan (with stints at Via del Vi and Baston), and Bastien Beaudouin of Baston (Best Pizza Fooding Guide 2022). The concept? A little den that pulsates to the rhythm of their inspiration, with goodies sourced from local producers – market gardens, livestock farmers and small-boat fishermen. The evening we went, sitting comfortably on Bruno Rey chairs, the six-course seasonal menu oozed wabi-sabi: silky smooth smoked eggplant velouté with anchovy and cashew nuts; delicious duck tartare mi-cuit, tone-on-tone with beetroot ice cream topped with dukkah; red mullet full of swagger with fresh peppers in a fish jus; and free-range chicken crowned with porcini mushrooms from Capcir. To round it all off, a divine mel i mató (a sweet fromage frais) infused with apricot and jasmine tea, or rousquille (a Catalan biscuit) remixed with lemon, fig and fig leaf. · Maria Mariaux
