The story
In the village of Champlive, just 20 minutes from Besançon, the Beauquier family has been welcoming guests to the Auberge du Château de Vaite for decades. What began as a humble farmhouse has grown into a cherished address in the Doubs region, known for its genuine hospitality and deep connection to the local landscape.
The kitchen here is firmly rooted in the traditions of Franche-Comté, with a menu that changes with the seasons and highlights the best of the region. The restaurant is particularly known for its regional specialties, including morilles (morel mushrooms) and cuisses de grenouilles (frog legs) sourced from the property’s own private pond. This is French cuisine at its most sincere: homemade, ingredient-driven, and respectful of the seasons.
The dining room offers a warm, inviting atmosphere, and when the weather cooperates, the flower-filled terrace becomes the place to be, overlooking a vast, beautifully landscaped park. A small stream runs through the property, crossed by a wooden bridge, and the garden is dotted with a relaxation kiosk, a children’s play area, and a pétanque court. It’s a setting that encourages lingering, whether for a long lunch or a quiet dinner.
The restaurant’s commitment to quality has earned it a Michelin recommendation, a nod to its consistent, refined take on traditional cooking. The auberge also offers nine charming guest rooms, making it an ideal base for exploring the Doubs valley and the forests of the Jura. For travellers, the formule soirée-étape combines dinner and accommodation in a seamless, restful experience.
At the Auberge du Château de Vaite, the focus is on simple pleasures: good food, a beautiful setting, and the warmth of a family that has been perfecting its art of welcome for over sixty years.
