The story
In the quiet Bas-Rhin village of Sand, just 25 minutes from Strasbourg, La Charrue is a family-run hotel-restaurant that has earned a Michelin Recommended distinction. Since February 2022, Chef Nicolas Laurent—trained in the region's starred kitchens—has led this address alongside his parents, Doris and Olivier, writing a new chapter for a house they know intimately.
The restaurant offers two distinct culinary experiences. The gastronomic table, La Table de Nicolas Laurent, presents a modern cuisine that is both inventive and deeply rooted in Alsatian terroir. Seasonal menus change with the chef's inspiration, highlighting local ingredients sourced through short supply chains. Dishes like wild line-caught sea bass roasted on the plancha with samphire and shellfish, or an open ravioli of snails from the Meyer farm in Ebersheim, show a kitchen that balances precision with a sense of place. The celebrated Profiterole de La Charrue, with Madagascar vanilla ice cream and Mulhaupt chocolate sauce, is a signature finale.
Alongside the fine dining, a Winstub offers a more rustic take on Alsatian tradition. Here, classics such as homemade foie gras d'oie, escargots, and fried carp fillets are served in a convivial, unpretentious setting. Chef Laurent also champions local game, prepared in keeping with regional hunting traditions.
La Charrue is more than a restaurant. Its comfortable rooms and suites—some with private saunas or terraces, others accessible for reduced mobility—make it a welcoming base for exploring the Alsace Wine Route or the nearby Europa-Park. The atmosphere throughout is warm, familial, and authentically Alsatian, with a modern ease that makes every visit feel like a genuine pause.
