The story

Steinmuehl Restaurant in Lampertheim | Award-Winning Alsatian Cuisine

A regional institution by the Goettlé family

Steinmuehl in Lampertheim serves as a hub for Alsatian cuisine, operated by the Goettlé family who have established the venue as a recognized destination. The dining room features kelsch tablecloths arranged with antique objects and locally made ceramics, all lit by guinguette-style fixtures. Located fifteen minutes from Strasbourg, the restaurant opens Monday through Friday, prioritizing traditional preparation and a relaxed pace.

Signature tarts and hearty plates

The kitchen highlights the flambéed tart prepared in savory and sweet variations. Diners choose the classic version topped with farm-fresh crème fraîche, onions, and lardons, or opt for the apple and cinnamon tart flambéed in Calvados. A representative combination includes sautéed potatoes, bibeleskäss, and smoked Black Forest ham, while the pork shank cooked in beer accompanies crispy potatoes dressed with Munster cheese and cumin, reflecting the depth of Alsatian cooking.

Desserts and group dining

Sweet finishes arrive as the flambéed mirabelle plum tart or snow eggs set within a vanilla cream sauce. Larger parties can reserve group menus tailored to their needs, including a formula that allows unlimited tarte flambée to foster a communal atmosphere. Steinmuehl also offers outdoor seating, providing space for al fresco dining when conditions permit.

Judging by the big parking lot and the record turnout on this mundane Monday night, the D’Steinmuehl inn is operating at full throttle! It comes as no surprise to this regional institution (kelsch tablecloths, antique objects, locally made ceramics, guinguette-style lighting), where the Goettlé family delights guests with well-prepared Alsatian treats. Devoured the night we went (using our hands of course!): a classic flambéed tart, perfectly executed in both the classic version (topped with farm-fresh crème fraîche, onions and lardons) and the sweet version (topped with apples and cinnamon flambéed in Calvados), along with the flavor combo of sautéed potatoes, bibeleskäss (farm-fresh fromage blanc, garlic and fresh herbs) and smoked Black Forest ham, which was just as representative of the local terroir. Otherwise, spotted on the neighboring tables: a bucolic mountain of dandelion greens topped with a poached egg and lardons, pork shank cooked in beer, crispy potatoes with Munster and cumin… What about the desserts? There’s flambéed mirabelle plum tart, or snow eggs in a vanilla cream sauce. // Marcelle Claudepierre
