The story

Kurpfalz Weinstuben Berlin: Traditional German Wine Restaurant & Michelin Recommended

A Berlin Institution Since 1935

Tucked away in a courtyard off Wilmersdorfer Strasse, Kurpfalz Weinstuben has been a fixture of Berlin’s dining scene since 1935. Founded by Bruno and Aenne Müller, the wine tavern quickly became a beloved meeting place for the stars of old West Berlin—names like Hans Albers and Hildegard Knef once signed its guest book. Today, its reputation for tradition and quality is recognised by the Michelin guide, which recommends the restaurant for its authentic atmosphere and outstanding wine cellar.

The restaurant is a celebration of German and regional cooking, with a focus on the hearty, unpretentious dishes of the Palatinate. Chef Robert Pucek, who took over the kitchen in 2023, respects the classics while adding a modern twist. The menu might feature a "Pfälzer Saumagen" (a traditional Palatinate stuffed pig's stomach) served with potato purée, sauerkraut, and gravy, alongside more contemporary creations like a Tataki of Adlerfisch with black garlic, beetroot, and chili. The kitchen’s dedication to "bodenständige deutsche Küche, neu interpretiert" (down-to-earth German cuisine, newly interpreted) is evident in every dish.

Wine is the soul of Kurpfalz Weinstuben. The list is a deep dive into German viticulture, with a special emphasis on wines from the Palatinate region. Over 50 wines are available by the glass, and the cellar holds some 800 different bottles, from everyday Pfalz wines to rare, collectible vintages. The atmosphere is "urig" (rustic and cosy), with a wood-panelled interior that invites lingering over a meal with family, friends, or after a night at the theatre. A private dining room with a fireplace is available for events.

A very cozy wine tavern (founded in 1935) offering 50 wines by the glass and 800 selections, predominantly from the Palatinate region. Food is also served: a set menu and plenty of hearty traditional comfort food.
