The story

Macionga Berlin: Modern Seasonal Cuisine & Wine Pairing at Michelin-Recommended Restaurant

At Macionga in Berlin’s West, André Macionga and his team have created a restaurant and wine bar where fine dining feels genuinely relaxed. Since opening in December 2022, the 58-seat dining room and 28-seat counter in the wine bar have become a destination for those who value precise cooking and serious wine.

The kitchen, led by chef Christopher Wecker, describes its style as “Urkraftküche” – a cuisine that respects each ingredient’s origin and natural flavour profile. Dishes are built on fine, mostly regional raw materials, transformed into what the team calls “freshly interpreted classics of German and French cuisine.” The menu changes with the seasons, offering à la carte options as well as a four-course (€68) or six-course tasting menu (€96). Standouts include roasted hake with blood sausage dumpling and sauerkraut beurre blanc, and a Spreewald-style beef tartare with dill, cucumber, and consommé.

André Macionga himself is a sommelier and winemaker who curates the wine list – now over 750 labels – and collaborates with German, French, and Spanish estates to create his own cuvées. His “Es Ist Wie Es Ist” wine, made with Franconian master winemaker Horst Sauer, is now in its ninth vintage. The wine pairing here is not an afterthought: it’s central to the experience, offered from €10 per glass, with an advanced pairing from €24. The restaurant’s philosophy is summed up simply: “Eating to share, to combine, for small and large hunger – together at a high level, without pressure, with joy.”

Michelin recognised Macionga with a Recommended award, a fitting nod to a place that balances ambition with approachability. Weekend lunch is served Saturdays and Sundays, offering more straightforward, intensely flavoured dishes from the team’s own midday favourites. The wine bar, open without reservation, is a relaxed spot for a glass or a bottle.

Concept Restaurant and wine bar in classic West Berlin; à la carte or menu (3–6 courses) that you assemble yourself. Cuisine Style Christopher Wecker prepares modernized-classical dishes, with a hint of Asia often subtly blending into the Francophile foundation. The beef tartare with yellow radish and cucumber salad, served alongside a cup of consommé, is a successful play on temperatures featuring wonderfully balanced seasoning, as is the scallop with peach and foamy goat cheese sauce. Sweetness, acidity, and heat characterize the tender Iberico pork cheek. Most portions are tapas-sized. Wine Even as a sommelier at Tim Raue, André Macionga reserved a permanent place for his own selections. Given the 750 references, the vintage depth and precisely matched course pairings are a genuine pleasure, and the non-alcoholic pairing is equally harmonious. Atmosphere Relaxed elegance, a perceptive host, and flattering lighting, seasoned with a charming pinch of chaos. Verdict Exceptional wine enjoyment and elegant cuisine entirely free of pretension.
