The story

Zum See: Alpine Mediterranean Dining in Zermatt's Historic Hamlet

Four decades of mountain hospitality

Zum See has anchored Mediterranean-alpine cuisine in this remote Zermatt hamlet since the early eighties, transforming three hundred fifty year old wooden chalets into a steadfast dining destination. The Mennig family built the foundation when Max and Greti first opened the doors, and their descendants Markus and Marion now steer daily operations with quiet precision. Regulars still wear custom black caps marking forty years of visits, a visible record of continuity in a transient region. Guests settle into the heavy timber beams while waiting for the kitchen to fire up.

Portuguese craftsmanship above the clouds

Chef Adelino Martins Pinto runs a remarkably compact kitchen that punches well beyond its physical limits. He bridges Mediterranean cooking with high-altitude ingredients, treating every protein with deliberate pacing rather than theatrical flair. His training informs the approach, favoring clean finishes over heavy sauces while respecting the rugged terrain surrounding the property. Seasonal shifts arrive without fuss, keeping the lineup responsive to local harvests and mountain weather patterns.

Signature plates and cellar selections

The menu highlights octopus sliced thin for carpaccio, alongside line-caught sea bass finished with a bright provençal reduction. House-made noodles appear frequently, often carrying a pale veal bolognese that relies on slow simmering rather than heavy cream. Sweetbreads and veal kidneys round out the savory offerings, proving that offal holds a permanent place here. A Gault&Millau fourteen rating reflects this consistent execution, while the extensive wine list balances Swiss producers with French and Italian staples.
