The story
In Blieskastel, the Hämmerle family runs two restaurants under one roof. Landgenuss is the more casual sibling, a place where the welcome is warm and the cooking is direct. Cliff, Stéphanie, Emely, and their team invite guests to enjoy "tolle Speisen und guten Wein" in a familiar, relaxed atmosphere. The setting is a friendly country house with a terrace that becomes the main attraction in summer.
The kitchen practices a style of country cooking that draws deeply from the Saarland's larder. A detailed list of regional producers—from the goats' cheese dairy Birkenhof im Warndt to the bio mushrooms of Kalkum Mirko in Saarbrücken—shows a commitment to local sourcing. Yet the menu is not purely provincial. Mediterranean touches appear naturally, as in the Loup de Mer with crispy guanciale and sage, or the signature Fischsuppe, a fish soup praised by the critic Gusto as good as anything you will find in the south of France. This ability to move from a classic Wiener Schnitzel to Hereford Rinderfilet with goats' cheese and green pepper is what defines Landgenuss.
The Michelin Guide has awarded Landgenuss a Bib Gourmand, recognising its "good quality, good value cooking." The inspectors noted the seasonal awareness and the smart sourcing of regional products. A winter menu might feature braised veal cheek paired with beef filet, local bio mushrooms, and winter vegetables, demonstrating a kitchen that respects tradition without being bound by it. Desserts like the Créme brûlée with goats' cheese, vanilla, and orange-Aperol sorbet show a playful touch that rounds out a meal of honest, satisfying cooking.
The restaurant offers a changing three-course daily menu alongside its à la carte classics, making it easy to return often. From the Löwenzahn-Feldsalat starter to the Französische Ritter (brioche French toast) with berry and salted caramel walnut ice cream for dessert, the cooking is grounded, generous, and unfussy. Landgenuss is a reminder that fine country cooking, when done with skill and sourced with care, needs no fanfare.
