The story
In a historic building on the Altstädtischer Markt, where the city inspector once kept watch over the market square, owner Benjamin Döbbel now runs a restaurant that has earned a Michelin Recommendation. The setting is intimate, the approach is personal, and the cooking is a precise, seasonal, and international affair.
Döbbel, together with his friends and family, creates menus that rotate with the seasons. The kitchen sources produce from regional butchers and organic farms, and the cooking is proudly handmade — from the ice cream to the pickled gherkins. The restaurant currently offers no à la carte dishes; instead, guests choose between two evolving four-course menus: one built around meat, the other around fish.
The meat menu might begin with a small bread course and a gesture from the kitchen, then move to a sous-vide Tafelspitz with capers and olive oil, followed by a creamy chestnut course with Dijon mustard, Williams pear, and walnut gremolata. The main event is a tenderloin of Jacks Creek grass-fed beef, served with wild broccoli, celeriac, and a crispy potato, all tied together with a rich jus. Dessert is a light buttermilk ball with tonka bean and orange.
The fish menu offers a different trajectory: cured Label Rouge salmon with saffron rouille and candied horseradish, a foamed bouillabaisse with shimeji mushrooms and a prawn gyoza, and a poached Arctic char fillet with wild cauliflower, sweet potato, mussels, and kale dumplings. It closes with an Opera slice of nougat, white chocolate, and hazelnut, paired with a raspberry-tarragon ice cream. Vegetarian options and alternatives for allergies are available upon request.
A dedicated sommelier service, run in partnership with Magdeburg-based wine specialist Basta, provides carefully selected pairings for each course, focusing on natural, organic, and biodynamic wines from Europe and South Africa.
The restaurant is open Friday and Saturday evenings, with special events and themed nights — including international evenings with live music — adding variety throughout the year. For larger groups, the space can accommodate private events, and the kitchen also offers catering and cooking classes.
Inspektorenhaus is a place where the cooking is thoughtful, the ingredients are respected, and the welcome is genuine. It is a well-deserved Michelin Recommended address in Brandenburg an der Havel.
