The story
In Höchstädt an der Donau, near Dillingen, Gabi and Daniel Stoiber have transformed a family-run tavern into a destination for modern cuisine. The couple took over the historic Zur Glocke in 2004, bringing a vision of ambitious, seasonal cooking to the space. Chef Daniel Stoiber, trained in a Michelin-starred kitchen, focuses on a philosophy of honest, creative food: "Bodenständig und mit Freude Besonderes zu kochen" – down-to-earth and joyful in cooking the exceptional.
The restaurant’s interior is a study in deliberate restraint. Raw concrete, wood, glass, and felt create a warm, modern setting that lets the food take center stage. A fireplace anchors the room, while soft, indirect light falls across the tables. For warmer months, the Hofgarten offers a sheltered, almost Mediterranean escape under a large chestnut tree, with candlelight and the silhouette of a 16th-century church in view. A private dining room, the Flaminarium, accommodates groups up to 40 in a warm, sophisticated space.
Zur Glocke’s commitment to carefully prepared food at a fair price has earned it a Michelin Bib Gourmand. The kitchen relies on regional, seasonal products, crafting them into dishes that are both grounded and creative. The restaurant is also consistently praised by German guides, including 6 GUSTO pans and 2 Varta Diamonds, confirming its place as a reliable choice for thoughtful modern cuisine in the region.
