The story

Lido Hafen in Düsseldorf – Michelin-Recommended Modern Cuisine on the Water

Architecture, water and urban flair

In the heart of Düsseldorf’s Medienhafen, Lido Hafen occupies an architectural statement built directly on the water. The setting – modern glass and steel reflecting the harbour’s gentle shimmer – creates an atmosphere that is both exclusive and inviting. Light plays across the room as the city hums outside, making the restaurant as much a destination for its design as for its food.

Chef Benjamin Kriegel’s conscious kitchen

The kitchen is led by chef Benjamin Kriegel, together with his wife Ramona. Their approach is rooted in sustainability and a deep respect for ingredients. The menu changes regularly to showcase the best of what the region and the season offer, turning each visit into a new discovery. It is this commitment to quality and freshness that has earned Lido Hafen a Michelin Recommended distinction, a recognition of its place among Düsseldorf’s noteworthy dining rooms.

A menu that journeys through flavour

The current tasting menu, “Lido im Hafen”, is a seven-course arc that moves from land to sea and back again. It opens with a departure – Vacherin with pear vinegar, smoked salmon trout, and tartare on sourdough – before heading out to sea with scallop, fennel, and bisque. Winter brings yellowfin mackerel with fermented chili and kimchi; then monkfish with cabbage and borscht stock. River and field arrive as pikeperch with kale, potato, and veal aspic. A black salsify course with truffle and egg yolk leads into Iberico goulash with smoked paprika, followed by duck à l’orange with hazelnut and orange hollandaise. The journey ends close to home: sugar beet, pear, altbier, and sourdough, then an ice cream cup that nods to the Lido tradition. Wine pairings are available in four to seven courses, each selected to complement the arc of the meal.

Seasonal modern cuisine, consistently refined

Lido Hafen’s modern cuisine is defined by its clarity and precision. Dishes are built on fresh, seasonal components, presented without unnecessary ornament. The kitchen’s confidence shows in the balance of each plate – fermentation, curing, and careful saucing all play a role. This is cooking that lets ingredients speak, supported by technique and a sense of place. Whether you choose the full seven-course menu or a shorter version, the experience is one of thoughtful progression and genuine flavour.

Concept The menu concept offers guests a choice between four and seven courses. The newly introduced and highly attractively priced four-course menu is ideal for those new to fine dining. Culinary Style Benjamin Kriegel stays true to his style, combining select ingredients of gourmet cuisine with elements of traditional home cooking in his menus. For his take on rollmops, Kriegel combines kohlrabi kimchi with rolled turbot, pen shell, and turbot stock, while alongside the tender royal red shrimp, he elegantly presents a tower of pointed cabbage marinated in verjus. Wine Ramona Kriegel curates the wine selection, confidently relying on well-known and excellent European producers. Ambiance Minimalist and high-quality furnishings. The transparent glass cube, accessible by land only via a bridge, creates the feeling of sitting directly on the (harbor) water. Conclusion An elegant atmosphere and a refined, intricate culinary style form a harmonious blend here.
