The story
Setzkasten occupies an improbable space: the basement of a supermarket. In the Zurheide CROWN Center, the bustle of grocery shopping gives way to a quiet, intimate dining room. The restaurant’s own website poses the question: “A fine dining restaurant in the basement of a supermarket?” The answer is a confident yes. The cozy atmosphere seamlessly blends into the market surroundings, offering a perfect escape from the everyday.
Behind the stove is Egor Hopp, whose cooking draws on the vibrant produce of the Zurheide Feine Kost market and the flavours of his native Kazakhstan. This interplay of a world-class market and Central Asian roots gives his modern international cuisine “that certain something.” Hopp and his team work with obvious joy, creating dishes that are both creative and precise.
The Michelin-starred kitchen (awarded one star in 2026) offers a choice of four or six courses. Menus read like a seasonal journey: lobster with carrot, bisque and tamarind; pike-perch dumpling with kohlrabi and leek; red mullet with kale, veal tongue and quince; and Gop beef with parsnip, hay and celery. A pandan leaf dessert with dill, pear and Brazil nut finishes the meal. For an extra indulgence, the “Wareniki” – potato dumplings with smetana and Ossetra caviar – can be added. The cooking is refined, ingredient-driven, and unmistakably personal.
Friday and Saturday lunch are also available, and the team accommodates vegetarian or pescatarian menus with advance notice. With a broad smile and a ready quip, Egor Hopp and his crew make guests feel genuinely welcome. As they put it: “We love being hosts and creating unforgettable moments for our guests.” Setzkasten is a place where the contrast between the grocery store above and the culinary world below becomes part of the charm.
