The story
For over 25 years, Spitzweg has been a fixture on the left bank of the Rhine, a place where friends of good taste gather. Located opposite the Quirinus-Münster in the heart of Neuss, the restaurant is run by Marika Weinhold-Blum and Peter Blum, whose hands-on leadership has cultivated a loyal following. The name itself is a nod to the 19th-century painter Carl Spitzweg, and the atmosphere is one of warm, professional hospitality.
The kitchen philosophy is refreshingly direct: honest, unadorned cooking that lets the quality of ingredients speak. The team draws on Mediterranean, Alpine, and occasionally Asian or Oriental influences, all while staying rooted in the seasons. Menus change roughly every six weeks, with a focus on regional and seasonal produce. A current menu, "First Signs of Spring," offers dishes like red beet with burrata and pesto, or an octopus and salsiccia gröstl with fennel. For those who prefer to surrender choice, the surprise menus—in five or seven courses—are a beloved institution.
The restaurant’s commitment to quality has not gone unnoticed. Spitzweg holds a Michelin Recommended distinction, a testament to its consistent, refined international cuisine. Beyond the main dining room, there are two private spaces: "Carlchen" for up to 35 guests and "Der Poet" for groups up to 12, making it suitable for everything from a quiet dinner à deux to a family celebration. In warmer months, a summer terrace offers additional seating.
