The story
Restaurant Jean is the domain of chef Johannes Frankenbach, who runs the kitchen in the historic Hotel Frankenbach, a family business since 1948. The restaurant’s name is the French diminutive of Johannes, a nod to the family’s deep connection to France. Located in the heart of Eltville am Rhein, just steps from the old town and the river, Jean occupies the ground floor of this long-established Rheingau hotel.
The menu at Jean showcases “gehobene deutsche, französisch inspirierte Küche” – elevated German dishes with a French backbone, anchored in seasonal and regional ingredients. This results in a cuisine that is both classic French and Mediterranean in spirit. Expect composed plates like a creamy Crème Brûlée & Terrine de Foie Gras de Canard with pear and pistachio, or Scottish Salmon with miso mayonnaise and white bean cream. Main courses range from Salt Marsh Lamb Rack with an olive crust and thyme jus, to Truffled Guinea Fowl Breast with lemongrass jus and corn cream. A dedicated four- to five-course Gourmet Menu offers a complete journey through the kitchen’s best.
Since November 2014, Jean has held a Michelin star, a recognition that underscores the precision and consistency of the cooking. The wine list leans heavily on regional Rheingau producers, complemented by a strong selection of French wines from Bordeaux and Burgundy.
The dining room is part of the hotel, and in warmer months, guests are served in the shaded Platanenhof courtyard. The atmosphere is refined yet welcoming, fitting for a restaurant that has been part of the local fabric for over 75 years. Reservations are essential for dinner, served Thursday through Sunday from 6:00 PM.
