The story
La Petite Cave de Jeannette brings an undogmatic bistro dining experience to Essen since opening its doors in 2017. After two decades running larger venues, chef Jeannette Schnitzler and her husband Peter sought a smaller space where hospitality feels direct and personal. They found a subterranean room on Kortumstraße that immediately reminded them of a quiet spot on Paris’s Rive Gauche. The compact layout established a foundation for their weekly creative menus, a consistent approach that recently earned recognition from both Der Feinschmecker and the Schlemmer Atlas.
The fusion kitchen abandons a fixed traditional menu in favor of a surprise offering that shifts every week. This culinary approach blends French techniques with Mediterranean and Asian accents, anchored by seasonal ingredients sourced locally. Recent preparations have included duck breast with forest mushrooms and cranberries, as well as Breton sole paired with a shallot vanilla sauce. Peter Schnitzler also highlights a veal fillet served with classic sauce Robert, while the dessert counter frequently features thick slices of buttery brioche transformed into French toast.
Tables sit close enough together that strangers often share recommendations across the wooden surfaces. The confined footprint encourages a relaxed pace where diners linger over multiple courses without feeling rushed. Host Peter Schnitzler guides guests through a wine list featuring hundreds of selections, drawing heavily on French regions and German producers. He pours glasses with quiet enthusiasm, matching lighter Mediterranean plates to crisp whites and richer game dishes to structured reds.
