Pierburg - Erika Bergheim in Essen: Michelin-Recommended Fine Dining

Pierburg – Erika Bergheim: A Chef’s Return to Her Roots

In Essen-Kettwig, the Pierburg is the new home of chef Erika Bergheim, a quiet pioneer of German fine dining. After earning a Michelin star at Schlosshotel Hugenpoet—becoming the first starred female chef in North Rhine-Westphalia—and later running the Laurushaus, she now brings her focused, ingredient-driven International cuisine to a restaurant she helped shape from the ground up.

The philosophy here is refreshingly direct: the product is the star. Bergheim’s cooking avoids flashy effects. Instead, natural aromas are allowed to speak, and classic dishes are executed with precision that evokes deep flavour memories. As she puts it, “The guests should feel good and have a lovely evening when they eat with us.” This ethos earned the restaurant a Michelin Recommended award, a nod to its consistently high quality.

Two Menus, One Philosophy

The kitchen offers two distinct paths. The Pierburg-Karte is a bistro-style selection, featuring dishes like Skrei cod with sauerkraut beurre-blanc, or a Maispoulardenbrust with orecchiette and salt lemon. It is cooking that recalls good French bistros, family-run Italian trattorias, and the German inns of old.

For a deeper experience, the Selection E.B. gourmet menu is the state of the art in Bergheim’s interpretation. A six-course journey might begin with Black Tiger prawns and jalapeño, move to a ballotine of quail with beech mushrooms, and finish with a chocolate tart with miso caramel. Vegetarian and vegan options are given strong, creative attention—the five-course Vegan E.B. menu includes dishes like parsley root with hazelnut and sea buckthorn, and braised red cabbage with mango and cumin.

A Welcoming Atmosphere

The restaurant is open Wednesday through Sunday for lunch, coffee and cake, and dinner. The space—a completely redesigned dining room and small wine bar—seats up to 80 guests. It is a place built for genuine hospitality, where a carefully curated wine list supports the food without fanfare. Here, in a setting that feels both elegant and relaxed, Erika Bergheim continues to prove that the best cooking is rooted in respect for the ingredient and the guest.

Concept A modern country inn? A relaxed casual fine dining restaurant? Both! On one hand, a small à la carte selection and weekend specials in a bistro style; on the other, two tasting menus—each consisting of four or five courses—at a gourmet level. Featuring fish and meat or vegan options. The courses can also be ordered individually. Cuisine Style True to the concept, Erika Bergheim takes a dual approach behind the stove. Braised pig cheeks or a rustic onion steak with chanterelles represent everyday, comforting fare. It becomes significantly more sophisticated with crustacean tartare served with sea urchin foam, or with a succulent anglerfish accompanied by beetroot and bottarga. Wine The premium wine list focuses on Germany and France, featuring numerous rare Bordeaux vintages dating back to 1985. Atmosphere Chic design contrasts charmingly with the historic wooden ceiling from 1901. Warm and attentive service. Conclusion A relaxed culinary experience, surrounded by lush greenery.
