The story

Restaurant 1831 in Essen – Modern French Fine Dining in a Castle Winter Garden

A Setting Steeped in History

Restaurant 1831 occupies the left winter garden of Schloss Hugenpoet, a castle near Essen. The name recalls the year Baron Friedrich Leopold von Fürstenberg acquired the estate and restored its splendour. Today, the light-flooded conservatory combines raw brick walls, historic details and gold accents – an atmosphere that frames the meal without distraction.

The Cuisine of Chef Dominik Schab

Kitchen chef Dominik Schab leads the kitchen with a philosophy of preserving culinary traditions while surprising with the new. His MENÜ 1831 is offered as a four, five or six-course journey, each course built on filigree nuances that turn every plate into a highlight. The cooking is firmly rooted in Modern French techniques, yet the chef’s approach is anything but rigid – fine dining rethought, relaxed and uncommon. This distinctive style earned the restaurant a Michelin Recommended distinction for 2026.

Menus and Wines

The menu changes regularly; à la carte is not available. A wine pairing is offered, and the Weinkarte 1831 leans heavily on German wines from young winemakers and family-run estates, from hidden gems to trusted classics. Non-alcoholic pairings are also listed.

Events and Seasonal Offers

Throughout the year, the team hosts collaborative events such as “6 Hands Lunches” with guest chefs and “Küchenpartys” (kitchen parties). In early 2026, a special “Get to know 1831” four-course menu with matching wines or beer was available for €119 per person – a chance to sample the kitchen’s style at a more accessible price point. The restaurant closes periodically for a “creative pause”, during which the bistro in the remise remains open.

Practical Notes

The restaurant is open Wednesday to Saturday from 18:00 to 23:00. Reservations are required, and guests with allergies or dietary needs should inform the team at least two days ahead. Dogs are not allowed in the dining room, but the reception can arrange pet-sitting.
