The story

Restaurant Bastenhaus: Two Ladles Recognition for Palatinate Cuisine in Dannenfels

Roots at the foot of the Donnersberg

Restaurant Bastenhaus stands at the base of the Donnersberg, the highest peak in the Palatinate, where the kitchen balances long-standing local customs with modern culinary ideas. This family-run address near Dannenfels emphasizes regional produce and seasonal rhythms to build its menu. The setting invites guests to step away from routine, offering a relaxed atmosphere surrounded by the pristine forests of the region.

From coal miner's hut to family hotel

The site originates in the 17th century when Sebastian Fischer, a coal miner called Bastian, opened a stop for travelers and horses along the path. The Stollhof family took over in 1967, expanding the dining space before Berthold Stollhof launched hotel construction in 1980. Patrik Stollhof, a trained chef who worked internationally, and his wife Daniela now steer the business, bringing fresh energy while preserving the house's hospitality values.

Seasonal plates and regional signatures

The Schlemmer Atlas awards the restaurant two ladles for its commitment to seasonal programming and authentic Palatinate dishes. The kitchen serves knusprige Spanferkelhaxe and hausgemachte Trüffel Gnocchi, often grounding rich preparations in vegetable-focused sides. Regulars return for the Original deftiger Pfälzer Teller with Saumagen and bratwurst, while the Well-Cuisine section presents refined variations such as vitello tonnato with carpaccio or büffelmozzarella accompanied by peach compote.

Cozy interiors and accessible service

Reviewers highlight the comfortable interior located between the settlement and the woodland edge. Many diners combine a hike on the local trails with an evening meal, appreciating the direct access to the chef and the ability to arrange spontaneous requests. The family team maintains this personal touch as a defining feature, ensuring guests receive attentive care throughout their stay. A rustic Keltenhütte hut also offers classic fare like leberknödel and pea soup on weekends.
